The committee would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy 2024 whatever the weather.

Tips and hints for January
1. Clear any wet leaves from the crowns of plants.
2. Order seeds and Summer flowering bulbs.
3. Keep a small area of a pond ice free.
4. if we have snow brush it off heavily laden trees and shrubs.
5. Think positive, the days are lengthening!

It has been another “interesting” year weatherwise for gardeners, no change there then! We hope your gardens and allotments flourished. Once again we were so lucky with the weather for the Plant Swap, Open Gardens and Village Show. Thanks to everyone who contributed to and attended these events!

Tips and hints for December
1. Repair sheds and fences.
2. Continue taking hardwood cuttings.
3. Prune tall bush roses to prevent wind rock damage.
4. Bring in bulbs for Christmas flowering.
5. During Christmas week make a list of flowers in your garden, you may be surprised!

2023 Wine Tasting
The FGA Wine Tasting (last held in February 2020) returns on Saturday 11th November 2023 at 8pm. Each wine will be presented by people you may know!

Tickets cost £20 per person and include 6 wines served with bread, cheese and nibbles. Only 80 tickets are available and are sure to sell out in advance. Tickets can be reserved by emailing contact@foxtongardens.org or using the contact form here.

Tips and hints for November
1. Clean or recycle pots and trays
2. If the weather is frosty keep off the lawn.
3. Insulate those pots outside for the Winter.
4. Winter prune fruit trees and bushes.

Please join us for the return of one of our most popular events, the FGA Wine Tasting Evening, which will be held on Saturday 11th November 2023 at 8pm at the Village Hall!

2023 Open Gardens
A very big thank you to all who opened their gardens on an extremely hot and humid Sunday (25th June 2023), and another big thank you to all the visitors who braved the heat to visit. Refreshments in the cool church were very welcome! Understandably, visitor numbers were down on the last Open Gardens (in 2019) but we are delighted to say that £378 was raised, split between Cambridge Sustainable Food and the Woodland Trust.

2023 Best Kept Front Garden Competition
Once again, Peter Jackson from Scotsdales very kindly came along to do the final judging for this year’s competition. Many congratulations to the following (and to all who won best in area!):

  • First place: 42 Hillfield (Allan Newman and Lena Beale)
  • Second place: 18 St. Laurence Rd (Ian and Maria Matthews)
  • Third place: 47 High Street (Christine Mead)

The winner will be presented with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup at the Village Show in September.

2023 Village Show
This year’s Village Show will be on Saturday 9th September 2023. In August, every house in the village will receive a copy of the show schedule. We do hope as many as possible will enter (even if only 1 item!) and come along to view the show in the afternoon to view the exhibits, have some refreshments. enter the raffle and see the prizegiving.  For those already thinking about your entries, the draft programme is already online here.

Reminder: Return of cups
If you won a cup, or cups, at last year’s show, please can you return them by the end of July in order for them to be engraved. Please give them to Ian Constable, or contact us, if you have any questions.

Tips and hints for August
1. Trim hedges (but be mindful of nesting birds!).
2. Take cuttings from tender plants (e.g. fuchsias, pelargoniums).
3. Trim lavender when the flower heads have faded.
4. Lift and dry onions.

2023 Foxton Village Show – draft programme

This year’s Village Show will be held on Saturday 9th September 2023 and our preliminary programme is now available to download here. The Village Show is the highlight of the FGA calendar and always promises to be a fantastic afternoon.

We also encourage everyone in Foxton to get involved and enter exhibits for the show. There are over 100 categories to enter spread across 9 sections covering all manner of cultivation, cookery and crafting: Vegetables, Flowers, Fruits, Flower Exhibits, Pot Plant & Speciality, Homemade Produce, Photography, Crafts, Young Foxton.

With just over 10 weeks to go, it’s time to get planning!

Plant Sale and Swap
Once again we were blessed with a lovely morning for the annual plant sale and swap on Sunday 21st May 2023. Lots of plants bought, swapped and sold and plenty of cakes, books and produce were sold. Many enjoyed fresh scones, a drink and chatting to friends both inside and out. Thank you to all who supported the event.

2023 Best Kept Front Garden Competition
The preliminary judging for the best front garden competition will be done by the FGA committee over the next few weeks. We are delighted that Peter Jackson from Scotsdales will be joining us on Wednesday 12th July 2023 to judge the shortlisted gardens and select the winner. The Foxton resident with best kept front garden will be awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup at the Village Show in September.

1. Deadhead flowers as they fade.
2. Divide bearded irises.
3. Layer and take cuttings from carnations and pinks.
4. Take semi ripe cuttings from shrubs.

2023 Foxton Open Gardens, Sunday 25th June 2023

We are delighted to announce that our Open Gardens event will be returning after several years’ absence and will take place next Sunday 25th June 2023 from 1-5.30pm. Sixteen locations, representing the full diversity of the village’s flora and fauna, will be open to ticketholders. 

Programmes (admitting you to all Open Gardens, the Dovecot and Meadow, Foxton Allotments, and Foxton Orchard) are currently on sale now in the Foxton Village Shop and can be purchased at St Laurence church on Sunday from 1pm: 

Adults: £3

Children 13 or under: FREE

Our younger visitors are also encouraged to take part in the Great Bee Hunt Challenge. Will you find the three wooden yellow bees hidden in each garden?

Tea and cake will be available at St Laurence Church from 2-5pm.

As usual all profits raised will be going to charity. This year, these will be split between the Woodland Trust (celebrating its 50th year) and Cambridge Sustainable Food.

Please do come along, have a stroll around the village admiring the gardens and enjoy some refreshments!

2023 Plant Sale and Swap, Sunday 21st May 2023

Join us for this popular event which will be held on Sunday 21st May 2023 from 10am-12pm at the Village Hall!

Bring your spare plants and go home with new plants for your garden. The WI will be serving Tea and Cakes. The forecast for Sunday is looking good and we look forward to a wonderful event.
