2024 Village Show
Once again we were fortunate with the weather for our annual show on Saturday, September 7th. it was so good to see the many entries in the different classes, fruit, vegetables, flowers, photos, craft, produce etc. We have some very talented people in the village! It was especially pleasing to see so many entries in the Junior Foxton section this year, a delight to see their inventiveness and ingenuity. The “cafe” was kept very busy, all the tables both inside and outside seemed full and there were displays of some village clubs and activities. Many thanks to all who entered, attended and helped in any way with this lovely village “do”. Foxton Village Show report by FGA Chair Steve Tongish

The 2024 Foxton Village Show was an event for the entire community.

The 86th annual Foxton Village show was held on Saturday the 7th of September at the Village Hall with nearly 400 entries from over 60 participants. While the number and quality of this years’ exhibits were certainly impressive, the true measure of the event’s success has always been measured by the number of Foxton friends and families that join us to enjoy the day’s festivities.

The Foxton Village Show is a traditional event that lies at the very heart of village life and it is wonderful to see how vegetables, flowers, fruit, pot plants, homemade produce, photography, and crafts can bring our community together. In the company of our neighbours we enjoyed the bounty of our gardens, and delighted in our creativity, accompanied by a hot cup of tea and delicious slice of cake.

Helping us adjudicate and present 20 cups and trophies to this years’ lucky winners was a team of expert judges and our Cambridgeshire District Councillor, James Hobro, with special prizes also awarded to the amazing craft and project entries in our youth categories.

We were also pleased to host several Foxton community groups that are always looking for volunteers and support. This included the Foxton Twinning Association, The Foxton Singers, Friends of the Foxton Wood, and the Christmas Windows Project. You can learn more about these worthy organisations by referring to their articles in the latest edition of The Laurentian. Please consider getting involved!

Our special thanks to all the people that made this years’ Village Show such a tremendous event: the FGA members, the judges, the cake bakers, and everyone that lent a hand. Mark your calendar for the 13th of September 2025 for the 87th Foxton Village Show. We look forward to seeing you with your entries next year.

Foxton Village Show 2024

The 2024 Foxton Village Show was held on Saturday 7th September 2024. The committee would like to thank everyone who volunteered, attended, exhibited, entered, adjudicated or contributed in any way to this wonderful village event. A list of prize winners has been posted here and a full report from FGA Chair Steve Tongish will be posted here soon.

Foxton Village Show this Saturday!

The 2024 Foxton Village Show is this Saturday 7th September in the Village Hall from 2-4pm. It’s not too late to submit your entry forms. They are due on Thursday the 5th at 7pm and can be dropped off at several locations around the village.

Whether or not you have entered do come along in the afternoon from 2pm to view the entries, enter the raffle, or enjoy some tea and cake. We look forward to seeing you at this wonderful village event.

2024 Village Show
This year’s Village Show will be on Saturday 7th September 2024 at 2pm. Every house in the village has now received a copy of the show schedule, so do try and enter, even if only one item! Whether or not you have entered do come along in the afternoon, view the entries, join the raffle, swap or buy some books, have a drink and cake, meet up with old friends, make new ones and have a great time at this very enjoyable village event.
If you haven’t entered before, don’t worry, bring your entries to the hall between 9 – 11, where members of the committee will be only too happy to help.

Monthly news, August 2024

2024 Village Show
This year’s Village Show will be on Saturday 7th September 2024. Every house in the village will receive a copy of the show schedule in early August. We do hope as many of you as possible will enter (even if only 1 item!) and come along on the day from 2pm in the afternoon to see the exhibits, have some refreshments, enter the raffle, watch the prize giving, bring along books for the stall and  enjoy a “catch up” with friends and neighbours. We have been blessed in recent years with glorious weather for the show so fingers crossed that we are lucky again in 2024. The show is a lovely celebration of life in our village so do come and support the show.

2024 Best Kept Front Garden Competition
Once again, Peter Jackson from Scotsdales very kindly came along to do the final judging for this year’s competition. Many congratulations to the following (and to all who won best in area!):

  • First place: 1 The Green (Susanna Lester)
  • Second place: 6 Illingworth Way (Jill Hockley)
  • Third place: 59 Station Rd. (Gerald and Susan Dyke)

The winner will be presented with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup at the Village Show in September.

2024 Best Kept Front Garden Competition, judging on Thursday, 6th June 2024
Peter Jackson (from Scotsdales) has very kindly agreed to judge the competition again. As usual, committee members will do the preliminary area judging beforehand. The Foxton resident with best kept front garden will be awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup at the Village Show in September.

The categories for the Photos and Craft categories at the Village Show to be held on Saturday, September 7th 2024, are as follows:

Photos:

      1. Birds
      2. Skies
      3. Compeition
      4. Water
      5. Gardens

Craft, and an example of:

      1. Sewing
      2. Knitting or crochet
      3. Embroidery or tapestry
      4. Papercraft
      5. Painting
      6. Ceramics or pottery

Every house will receive a copy of the show schedule in August but here are the entries for the following classes.

Cup holders from last year’s show are asked to return them for engraving to IAN CONSTABLE 11 Illingworth Way tel 871508 (ian.constable1@ntlworld.com) as soon as possible and certainly by the end of July. Please do this sooner rather than later as Ian has a lot of cups to collect and arrange for engraving!

2024 Plant Sale and Swap report

On Saturday 11th May 2024, we held the annual Plant Sale and Swap.

Thank you to everyone who came to the event! We were blessed with perfect weather again. It was so good to see so many old (as in regular!) and new visitors enjoying the plants, the WI cake stall and tombola, and  sitting in the sun with drinks and scones whilst having a catch up with friends and neighbours. Once again it proved Foxton really enjoys a “bit of a do”!

2024 FGA AGM report

On Tuesday 16th April 2024, we held our Annual General Meeting in the Village Hall. We were delighted that so many people joined us!

The evening began with the brief presentations covering FGA activities over the last year, a financial report and an update on the allotments by Steve, Rebecca and Rachel, respectively,  followed by the election of officers for the upcoming year.

We then moved to the highlight of our meeting, a talk by our guest speaker David Short, entitled “My Life Behind Bars”.  David regaled us with entertaining anecdotes from his family’s landlordship of the Queen’s Head pub in Newton since 1962 intertwined with a potted history of pubs, covering the social function of pubs in village life, the history of beer and the changes he has observed in the industry over the last 60 years. It was a wonderful evening, enjoyed by everyone. Many thanks to David for giving such as wonderful talk and the free samples of gin!
