2024 Village Show
This year’s Village Show will be on Saturday 7th September 2024 at 2pm. Every house in the village has now received a copy of the show schedule, so do try and enter, even if only one item! Whether or not you have entered do come along in the afternoon, view the entries, join the raffle, swap or buy some books, have a drink and cake, meet up with old friends, make new ones and have a great time at this very enjoyable village event.
If you haven’t entered before, don’t worry, bring your entries to the hall between 9 – 11, where members of the committee will be only too happy to help.

Website update
We have recently made some updates to the website and some recent submissions to the Contact form may not have come through correctly. If you have been in touch and think this may be the case for you, please contact us again.

Monthly news, August 2024

2024 Village Show
This year’s Village Show will be on Saturday 7th September 2024. Every house in the village will receive a copy of the show schedule in early August. We do hope as many of you as possible will enter (even if only 1 item!) and come along on the day from 2pm in the afternoon to see the exhibits, have some refreshments, enter the raffle, watch the prize giving, bring along books for the stall and  enjoy a “catch up” with friends and neighbours. We have been blessed in recent years with glorious weather for the show so fingers crossed that we are lucky again in 2024. The show is a lovely celebration of life in our village so do come and support the show.

2024 Best Kept Front Garden Competition
Once again, Peter Jackson from Scotsdales very kindly came along to do the final judging for this year’s competition. Many congratulations to the following (and to all who won best in area!):

  • First place: 1 The Green (Susanna Lester)
  • Second place: 59 Station Rd. (Gerald and Susan Dyke)
  • Third place: 6 Illingworth Way (Jill Hockley)

The winner will be presented with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup at the Village Show in September.

2024 Best Kept Front Garden Competition, judging on Thursday, 6th June 2024
Peter Jackson (from Scotsdales) has very kindly agreed to judge the competition again. As usual, committee members will do the preliminary area judging beforehand. The Foxton resident with best kept front garden will be awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup at the Village Show in September.

Foxton Village Show
The categories for the Photos and Craft categories at the Village Show to be held on Saturday, September 7th 2024, are as follows:

Photos:

      1. Birds
      2. Skies
      3. Compeition
      4. Water
      5. Gardens

Craft, and an example of:

      1. Sewing
      2. Knitting or crochet
      3. Embroidery or tapestry
      4. Papercraft
      5. Painting
      6. Ceramics or pottery

Every house will receive a copy of the show schedule in August but here are the entries for the following classes.

Cup holders from last year’s show are asked to return them for engraving to IAN CONSTABLE 11 Illingworth Way tel 871508 (ian.constable1@ntlworld.com) as soon as possible and certainly by the end of July. Please do this sooner rather than later as Ian has a lot of cups to collect and arrange for engraving!

Some new dates for your diary!

  • FGA AGM, Tuesday, 16th April 2024
    7.30pm in the Village Hall meeting room.
    There will be a short formal start to present the annual accounts, review of last year’s activities, plans for this year and election for the committee. We always welcome new members who bring fresh ideas but don’t worry, you will not be pressganged to join!
    Following the formalities we are delighted to say that the speaker will be David Short, who will tell us about his “life behind bars” – nothing to do with imprisonment but about life at the Queen’s Head pub in Newton, where his son is now the third generation in charge. Anyone who has heard David will know what an excellent speaker he is, not to be missed. Wine, soft drinks and nibbles will be served so do come along and enjoy.
  • Plant Sale and Swap, Saturday May 11th 2024
    10am-12pm at the Village Hall
    Do come along to this always popular village event, as well as plants on offer the WI will be providing refreshments, a produce stall and running a tombola (no book stall this year).
  • The Foxton Village Show will be held on Saturday, September 7th 2024.

Monthly news, March 2024

The provisional 2024 dates for FGA events are as follows:
  • Tuesday, April 16th – A.G.M., details of the time and speaker to follow.
  • Saturday, May 11th – Plant Sale and Swap.
  • Saturday, September 7th – Village Show
At the time of writing all allotments plots are taken but if you are interested contact Rachel Harrison (FGA Allotments Secretary) to join the waiting list. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch!

Tips and hints for March
1. Prune bush and shrub roses.
2. Lift and divide overgrown perennials.
3. Split polyanthus and snowdrops after flowering.
4. Put growbags in the greenhouse to warm up.
5. Enjoy the Spring flowers.

2023 Foxton Village Show – draft programme

This year’s Village Show will be held on Saturday 9th September 2023 and our preliminary programme is now available to download here. The Village Show is the highlight of the FGA calendar and always promises to be a fantastic afternoon.

We also encourage everyone in Foxton to get involved and enter exhibits for the show. There are over 100 categories to enter spread across 9 sections covering all manner of cultivation, cookery and crafting: Vegetables, Flowers, Fruits, Flower Exhibits, Pot Plant & Speciality, Homemade Produce, Photography, Crafts, Young Foxton.

With just over 10 weeks to go, it’s time to get planning!

Plant Sale and Swap
Once again we were blessed with a lovely morning for the annual plant sale and swap on Sunday 21st May 2023. Lots of plants bought, swapped and sold and plenty of cakes, books and produce were sold. Many enjoyed fresh scones, a drink and chatting to friends both inside and out. Thank you to all who supported the event.

2023 Best Kept Front Garden Competition
The preliminary judging for the best front garden competition will be done by the FGA committee over the next few weeks. We are delighted that Peter Jackson from Scotsdales will be joining us on Wednesday 12th July 2023 to judge the shortlisted gardens and select the winner. The Foxton resident with best kept front garden will be awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup at the Village Show in September.

Return of cups
If you won a cup, or cups, at last year’s show, please can you return them by the end of July in order for them to be engraved. Please give them to Ian Constable, or contact us, if you have any questions.

Tips and hints for July
1. Deadhead flowers as they fade.
2. Divide bearded irises.
3. Layer and take cuttings from carnations and pinks.
4. Take semi ripe cuttings from shrubs.
